Last night I headed to the airport with Rob to meet up with Ryan and Kelly. I had arrived at the spot at which Rob and I would meet, then proceed to the airport, but I arrived before him. As I was walking down some stairs I noticed a man sitting on the floor. He was holding his wrist and shaking a little bit. There was blood everywhere. I looked at him and thought ,"This beggar is desperate.." I told myself, "This can't be real. That blood looks a little fake". (I had seen students in the North playing with blood capsules pretending to be hurt previously).
I looked a little closer and saw the gash on his wrist. Something was sticking out of it. The man tried to stop the bleeding with some cotton balls but he was so strung out on some drug that he was doing a poor job. He even lit the cotton on fire which was still in his hand. It took him a minute to realize it was burning him! I looked closer..."Is this real?"
People started to notice him. Then their facial expressions told me everything. Yup. This guy just gashed open his wrist. All the blood spilt everywhere was real. I had just arrived on the scene just moments before he did this to himself. People around him hadn't even noticed much until after I got there.
The security nearby came by and scanned him with a metal detector before asking him any questions. The EMS came buzzing down the road searching for the man while people started to crowd around. Thought of my first responder class started to kick in. "Should I do something?"
Rob arrived shortly after the EMS. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. But by the time he got there the man had already been cleaned up and was being led to the ambulance. All this happened in a short amount of time. "Am I the only one feeling a little sick seeing a wrist cut open?" I looked around. "Nope." There were definitely others watching with a shocked look on their face.
Now for some good news! Rob and I were able to see Ryan and Kelly!!! They flew in last night. It was so awesome to see some familiar faces. We talked for a while. It was good. They only stayed for the night. They should be up north now. I hope to see them soon. For now I must continue teaching at the church plant. It would be awesome to have another friend here (hint, hint). So now I'm going to get some rest. Its been a long day.
